LIVONIA, MICH. - Madonna Burkit ’19 (Humane Studies and Non-profit Leadership), thrives in non-profit leadership, impacting animal welfare and women's organizations. Paula’s House, a transitional home aiding homeless women in recovery, is where Burkit serves as Board President.
Majoring in Humane Studies at Madonna provided her with key knowledge about the many aspects of non-profit establishment, sustainability, and funding. As a student, she found adventure in online classes, creating friendships during hands-on volunteer experiences such as enhancing enclosures at the Detroit Zoo. Along with this, she volunteered with several nonprofit organizations such as March of Dimes, Relay for Life with the American Cancer Society, Salvation Army, homeless shelters, and the Detroit River International Refuge.
Burkit attributes her success to some divine intervention and the guidance of Humane Studies Chair Andrew Domzalski.
