After several years in progress, Professor Emerita Mary Minock’s second book of poetry has been released by Kelsay Books. A Time When You Know a House: Poems of Detroit complements Minock’s prose memoir entitled The Way-Back Room, published in 2011.
Minock said that her colleagues across Madonna University, from nursing to history to literature to art, proved to be an amazingly supportive community for the memoir effort, and she still appreciates their enthusiasm and feedback. "I miss my Madonna colleagues, and hope to hear what they think of the new book,” said Minock. The current poetry book was supported by a Madonna University Faculty Professional Development Research Award in May of 2013.
A review by Terry Blackhawk, author of One Less River, noted, "The collection pieces together a tapestry of mid-20th century life in the neighborhood around Clark Park . . . and pulses with the rhythms of factory shift changes, freighter horns, migrations, seasons, and the lives of neighbors of many different descents all 'striving for dignity.' . . . . Minock’s spirit, vulnerability, and a keen eye for detail make this a rewarding and very moving collection.
The book is available from Kelsay Books or on its Amazon Listing.
