LIVONIA, MICH.Madonna University’s Lyric Theatre will stage three performances of the classic musical comedy Once Upon a Mattress this April, with shows on April 4, 5, and 6. Directed by Barbara Wiltsie, the production promises laughter, vibrant costumes, and a playful twist on the familiar fairy tale of The Princess and the Pea

A Kingdom of Quirky Characters
The story centers on Princess Winnifred “Fred” the Woebegone, a brash outsider from the “swampy, foggy” kingdom of the Foggy Dew, who vies for the hand of the timid Prince Dauntless. Standing in her way is the domineering Queen Aggravain, who has banned all marriages in the realm until her son weds—a milestone she secretly vows to prevent.

Behind the Scenes: Resilience Amid Challenges
The cast and crew have navigated an unusually flu-ridden rehearsal process. “We’ve yet had a rehearsal with all members present,” Wiltsie shared. Illnesses complicated choreography sessions, but the team adapted, leaning on creative problem-solving to keep the production on track.

Medieval Flair with a Modern Twist
Audiences can expect inventive costumes blending medieval inspiration with repurposed modern garments, including gowns transformed to evoke a bygone era. The minimalist set design uses rotating flats to shift between castle locations like corridors, courtyards, and royal chambers, emphasizing the story’s fast-paced humor.

Why This Story?
“This musical is filled with fun moments, silly dances, and colorful costumes. It will be a much-needed relief for those with heavy hearts,” said Wiltsie. The musical’s absurdity, toe-tapping numbers, and lighthearted spirit aim to leave audiences refreshed.
