LIVONIA, MICH. – Alumna Cheryl Porter, has been elected as president of the American Water Works Association's (AWWA) board of directors, as of June 2024. Her historic election marks the first time an African American and a woman of color has held the top board position in the organizations 143-year history.
A Detroit resident, Porter serves as the chief operating officer of water and field services at Great Lakes Water Authority in Detroit, where she has worked since 2016. Since joining AWWA in 2005, she has been active with the Michigan Section of AWWA and served as an AWWA vice president. She is currently a member of the AWWA Finance Committee.
In 2008, Porter earned her MBA from Madonna University with a concentration in human resource management.
