LIVONIA, Mich. – As a result of meeting the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society’s (HIMSS) rigorous standards for quality health information technology (IT) and healthcare education, Madonna University has been named as a HIMSS Approved Education Partner (AEP).

Madonna University joins an exclusive group of organizations authorized to offer HIMSS-approved healthcare and health information technology education and training programs that prepare candidates for advanced knowledge in health IT or healthcare.

The Society commended the administration of Madonna University for offering a Health Sciences bachelor’s degree[BROKEN LINK] focused on the studies of population health, an increasingly important field of study.

There are two tracks of study available: Population Health Care Management and Population Health Care Informatics and Quality Systems. The programs are well rounded and focus on topics that include, but are not limited to, population health literacy, psychology, hospice, aging studies, systems analysis and design, project management, informatics, and clinical transformation with special emphasis on cultural humility and social justice. Each track requires two semester-long internships during which students work in a healthcare setting.

“Dr. Linda Nikpour and I are so proud to be named a HIMSS Approved Education Partner, and we are very excited for our students to have the opportunity to graduate from a program that has received this honor,” said Mary Mitsch, Ph.D., R.N., Professor of Nursing and Health, and Chair of Madonna’s Health Sciences Department. She explained that the interdisciplinary program was developed through collaboration with Madonna’s School of Business and an external executive advisory board.

Students studying Population Health Care Management will promote health, wellness and patient education. They will advocate for patients by assisting them to manage their care throughout a complex healthcare system. Possible jobs for a graduate include wellness coaches and consultants, community health liaisons, and care coordination specialists.

In the Health Care Informatics and Quality Systems Management track, students will learn to analyze data to improve quality, safety and transparency in healthcare. Identifying these trends could lead to designing new programs that would positively impact the healthcare system.

These programs also serve as a solid foundation to prepare the student to take the exam for either the Certified Associate in Health Information and Management Systems CAHIMS, or the Certified Professional in Health Information and Management Systems CPHIMS.

Ewa Matuszewski, CEO of MedNetOne Health Solutions and a member of Madonna’s Health Sciences advisory council, said, “Graduates of a values-based program, like Madonna’s, who also serve as healthcare advocates for vulnerable populations are attractive to organizations such as ours.” She noted that these academic programs will strengthen the skills, core capacities, diversity, preparation and responsiveness of health sciences majors.

“HIMSS is pleased to welcome Madonna University as an Approved Education Partner. By earning this designation, the organization has demonstrated that their educational development activities meet the rigorous standards for quality as identified by HIMSS. With the AEP designation, Madonna University establishes itself apart from others,” said Mara L. Daiker, senior manager, professional development, HIMSS.
