Crusaders Football has been an exciting addition to Madonna’s strong athletics program that has attracted new students, provided student-athletes with a quality education, built school spirit, and offered our neighbors a local football team to cheer.
The Crusaders compete in the Mid-States Football Association Conference and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The first full season began in the Fall of 2021. Some 60-plus student-athletes were recruited and began their studies in the Fall of 2019.
Launching a football program and equipping a team to take the field requires a substantial investment in weight-training facilities, locker rooms, uniforms, equipment, and other items. Currently, Madonna is adding a weight room and related athletic training center at the renovated Performing Arts, Athletic, and Academic Center (PAAAC), located just south of the Madonna Athletic Complex on Newburgh Road.
Investing in facilities and equipment will help Crusaders student-athletes prepare physically, as well as mentally.
Head Football Coach Herb Haygood brings a wealth of collegiate coaching experience to the Crusaders. He has coached four All-Americans, 11 all-conference, and 22 academic all-conference selections in addition to 13 players who have been drafted or signed as free agents in the National Football League. “I'm humbled and looking forward to inspiring our student-athletes to be men of character, motivate them to be their best, and support them in their academic, athletic, and life goals,” said Haygood.
