Curious how your credits will transfer?

Meet one-on-one with an admissions officer for a free preliminary credit evaluation. We’ll review your previous coursework, show you how your credits apply to your intended program, estimate how long it may take to finish your degree, and outline your next steps. Even if it’s been years since you last took a class, your credits are still reviewed. Some courses may need to be refreshed depending on your program, but there’s no minimum number of credits required to transfer—and many students find they’re closer to finishing than they expected.

Frequently Asked Questions - Transferring Credits

  1. How many credits can I transfer to Madonna?

Students can transfer up to 90 credits from a regionally accredited four-year institution and up to 74 credits from a regionally accredited two-year institution. There is no minimum credit requirement to transfer.

  2. How do I find out if my previous institution is regionally or nationally accredited?

Regional accreditation is the highest standard of institutional accreditation. It's held by most community colleges, public universities, and well-known private colleges, including Madonna. Credits from these institutions usually transfer smoothly.

Madonna University accepts transfer credits from schools that are regionally accredited. Credits from nationally accredited institutions are not eligible for transfer. Courses that are remedial, technical, vocational, or duplicate in nature are also not eligible for transfer.

If you're unsure about your previous school's accreditation, you can verify it on the US Department of Education's website

  3. The college I attended closed. Can I still transfer my credits?

Yes, and you can still request your transcripts even if your college or program has closed. Most closed institutions provide instructions on their website for how to obtain transcripts. If the school's website is no longer active, transcript records are typically maintained by:

If you're having a hard time accessing your transcripts from an institution that is no longer operating, please reach out to our admissions team at admissions@madonna.edu or call (734) 432-5339.

  4. I have an associate degree, will I still need to take any general education/ core curriculum classes?

    Short answer: It depends!

If you have satisfied the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) requirements and it is officially noted on your transcript, you're all set!

If you have not satisified the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) requirements, including students who:

    • Completed an associate degree without the MTA
    • Attended a four-year institution that doesn't grant the MTA
    • Are transferring from out-of-state
    • Or simply aren't sure whether they met the requirements

your previous coursework will be individually reviewed. Based on that review, you may need to complete some additional general education or core curriculum clourses to meet Madonna University's degree requirements.

  5. It's been awhile since I've been enrolled, do credits ever expire?

Madonna University does not have an institutional policy that "expires" college credits based on how long it has been since you last took a class. This is true whether your most recent coursework was completed at Madonna University or at another accredited institution. In most cases, previously earned credits can still be reviewed and considered toward your degree.

That said, academic programs and technology do evolve over time. Depending on your major, some courses - particularly in rapidly changing fields like technology, healthcare, or science - may no longer align with curriculum requirements. In those cases, you may be asked to retake or replace certain courses to ensure you're fully prepared for today's coursework and professional expectations.

  6. I've previously attended Madonna University – do I need to reapply?

    It depends on your situation!

If the last institution you attended was Madonna, you are in good academic standing, and there are no holds on your account, you can simply register for classes again - no need to reapply. We do recommend connecting with your success coach to make sure you're enrolling in the right courses and staying on track for your degree.

If you previously attended Madonna and later enrolled at another institution, you will need to reapply and submit transcripts from that school so all of your coursework can be reviewed.

If you previously attended Madonna and were recessed, there is a reinstatement process. This process begins by reaching out to an admissions officer, who will work with you individually to explain the steps required for reinstatement based on your specific situation.

  7. I was academically recessed at my last institution. Can I still be admitted to Madonna University?

Being academically recessed from a previous institution does not automatically disqualify you from admission to Madonna University. Admissions decisions are made holistically and take multiple factors into consideration, though all applicants must still meet program and university admission requirements. Because every situation is different, we strongly encourage you to connect with your admissions officer. They can review your academic history, discuss your goals, and help determine the best path forward based on your individual circumstances.
