Current Projects

Partnership with All Saints Soup Kitchen
Our center has built a partnership with All Saints Soup Kitchen and Pantry located in Detroit Mexicantown. Our student employee works there five days a week. She assists clients with their shopping from the food pantry and she helps serving hot meals. In addition, she conducts surveys of client satisfaction and keeps statistics on food pantry use.

On June 2 this year, the Center for Humane Studies in collaboration with Madonna University Office of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement organized a group of volunteers to build a two-raised-bed urban garden on the grounds of All Saints Parish, which is currently being maintained by one of our student employees and parish members. The crops will go directly to All Saints Soup Kitchen and Pantry.

Building the garden was a lot of fun, please see the video below.

Future Projects in Year 2017-2018

Partnership with organizations that help domestic violence victims to find shelters that accept companion animals
Many victims of domestic violence stay with their abusive and often dangerous partners because they cannot find shelters that would accept them with their companion animals, and they fear to leave them behind. Our Center plans to collaborate with organizations that work toward practical solutions for this problem, as promoting human-animal bond is integral to our mission.

Engaging students in creating and maintaining pollinator-friendly spaces on Madonna campus
As bees are dying off in record numbers around the globe and native plants supporting local pollinators are replaced by lawns or invasive species, we are facing a crisis of plant-based food production. This global problem is best addressed by local solutions and this is what we plan to do in this project.
