The Writing Major is designed for students who are pursuing or exploring a career as a writer; this major provides a theoretical framework, intensive practice, and professional guidance. A broad choice of electives allows students to focus on their own areas of interest. As a student in Madonna’s Writing program, you receive personalized academic advising and mentoring from our staff and faculty, guiding you through the program and helping you to shape your career goals.

You can expect rigorous academic work in the context of a smaller classroom where both classmates and professors know your name. The program prepares you for graduate work in several fields, among them English, Liberal Studies, MFA Programs and Law. It also prepares you for any career that values critical thinking and effective communication.

Rebekah knew even in middle school that she would want to become a writer, and the Writing Program at Madonna University allowed her that opportunity. The Writing department was filled with close-knit students and encouraging professors who took the time to learn each student by name and to work with them individually to follow their interests, expand on their strengths, and improve their weaknesses.

Through the Writing Program, Rebekah was able to volunteer in Detroit to work with English Second Language learners and was also given the opportunity to work at the Writing Center, an opportunity that not only helped her grow as a writer but as a teacher too. For a brief period after graduating from Madonna, Rebekah worked as an editor for a private publishing company before deciding to get her Master’s in English at the University of Toledo. She worked as a Graduate Teacher at Toledo and encouraged her students to see writing as both integral to future success but also as a fun way of expressing themselves. Without the support of her undergraduate professors, Rebekah would never have found the confidence to teach others, and she is indebted to them not only for helping her improve as a writer, but giving her the chance to learn how to be a teacher at the Writing Center, which prepared her for her work as a Graduate Teacher. Without the Writing Program at Madonna, Rebekah would not have been equipped to handle graduate level classes or even teach college freshmen, and she is indebted to her professors.

Since her graduation from Madonna, Rebekah has published “Brenna and the Spaceman,” in Twice Told Tales: A Fairy Tale Anthology (Bearded Scribe Press, 2015). She has also won the Shapiro Essay Writing Contest for 2016 for the essay, “The Neglected Sentimental Legacy of Harriet Jacobs and Solomon Northup.” She plans to apply to a Ph.D. Program in Composition and Rhetoric in Fall of 2016.
