Kristen DrabekKristen Drabek,

Why did you choose Madonna University?
Madonna University was the first and last university I looked at. I like to think that Madonna University chose me. The campus was beautiful and the staff was so welcoming and friendly. It felt like home right away. I also realized my faith would continue to grow and be practiced if I attended a university that accepted my beliefs. I knew they had an exceptional education program, as well as, a successful softball program. Since I wanted to become an elementary teacher and play softball in college, it was the perfect fit.

What do you think makes the experience and education at Madonna special?
Madonna University is so special because it is such a personal experience. You are not just a number at Madonna. The professors know your name, they care about your life, and they would do anything at any time to help. There are many clubs and activities that will fit your interests and spark your passion to participate or serve. Madonna University is about giving, not getting. That is a great lesson and trait you will leave with at Madonna University.

What have you been doing since graduation, career wise? (graduate school, employer?)
I graduated May 2015, and two months later was offered a Kindergarten teaching position at All Saints Catholic School in Canton, MI for the 2015-16 school year.

How has your Madonna degree played a role in your current position?
My Madonna degree prepared me for the classroom experience, management, professionalism, curriculum knowledge, and faith-based community. I feel confident in saying that my Madonna University degree not only prepared me for my career, but for my life.

What has been your most rewarding professional or personal experience since graduating?
The most rewarding professional and personal experience since graduation has been working with my first class of 18 Kindergarten students. It has been a blessing to teach and learn from them every single day.

Abby Hull

Abby Hull,
Why did you choose Madonna University?
I chose Madonna University initially because of how small it was and because it was close to home. I wanted to attend a university where I felt like I wasn’t just a number. I wanted to make lasting friendships, relationships, and connections and that is exactly what I did while there!

What do you think makes the experience and education at Madonna special?
My Madonna experience was very special because of the relationships I had with my professors, advisors, and classmates. Everything was very personal. My professors knew my name, they knew my story, and they knew why I wanted to be a teacher. Because of this they were able to help me as an individual to achieve my goal. Everyone I encountered, from the janitors to the secretaries to the professors, truly took the time to get to know me and help in any way possible. This is what I believe makes Madonna such a unique experience.

What have you been doing since graduation, career wise? (graduate school, employer?)
Since graduating, I started teaching 1st grade at Dove Academy of Detroit. It is such a joy to get to work with the children of Detroit and help prepare them for successful futures.

How has your Madonna degree played a role in your current position?
My degree has played a huge role in my career has a teacher. I felt very prepared for the profession in many ways. I didn't just learn how to write a lesson plan and teach it. I learned how to make a lasting impact on a child's life and how to motivate and inspire children. My professors constantly pushed me to think deeper and try harder. They expected the best from me. This impacted me when I was a student and still resonates with me now as a teacher. I now set those same high expectations for my own students.

What has been your most rewarding professional or personal experience since graduating?
My favorite teaching story actually happened at the very end of my student teaching experience. One of my kindergarten students came up to me and said, "Hey Ms. Hull, remember when you were a student teacher here?" I laughed and said, "I still am a student teacher!" He looked at me with the most serious look on his face and said "No. You're a real teacher now.” It was clear to me then that not only had I seen my own transformation as an educator during those 20 weeks of student teaching, but so had my very own students. I will always remember that moment because it was the day I realized I had made the leap from student to graduate.

Chelsea Marshall

Chelsea Marshall,
Why did you choose Madonna University?
I chose Madonna University because of the unique double major it offered in both Early Childhood and Elementary Education. I felt the course work to be designed to help me grow as a future educator both personally and professionally.

What do you think makes the experience and education at Madonna special?
Madonna University truly offers a personal college experience. I felt my goals and my future mattered not only to me but to my professors, advisors and even my dean. This offered a welcome change for me, as a transfer student, at Madonna I was more than a student I was part of our nation’s future and I felt supported in reaching my fullest potential.

What have you been doing since graduation, career wise? (graduate school, employer?)
After graduating, I was hired as an elementary school teacher in Berkley Schools. I have since returned to Madonna for graduate School and am earning my Master's in Autism Spectrum Disorders. I am currently a teacher at Burger Baylor Center for Children with Autism and feel blessed every day to support such a unique population of students.

How has your Madonna Degree played a role in your current position?
While earning my undergraduate degree at Madonna, I was able to embed my ZS Endorsement in Early Childhood and Special Education into my course work. This provided me with the professional foundation I needed to build my career in Special Education. My special education field experience and course work confirmed my passion for working with children with special needs. Every hour I spent both in the classroom and in a field experience helped me to better understand myself as an educator and further enabled me to seek opportunities in a specialized teaching field. Madonna University continues to challenge and support me in growing professionally through my graduate studies.

What has been your most rewarding professional or personal experience since graduating?
I feel blessed to have a profession that is both professionally and personally rewarding every day. Working with children with severe Autism Spectrum Disorder challenges me to grow as an educator and an individual each day. It has not only morphed my philosophy of education, but greatly influenced my perspective in life.
